Don’t Be Fooled By the Rhetoric of TESCREALists! Human-Extinctionism Is Widespread Within Silicon Valley

Elon Musk recently tweeted that:

Beff Jezos, aka Guillaume Verdon, responded with a reference to the “extinctionist mind virus.”

But both Musk and Verdon are extinctionists. This is the topic of my newest article in Truthdig, titled “Team Human vs. Team Posthuman — Which Side Are You On?” You can read it here. I provide an overview of the article’s main points on Twitter/X here, for those still lingering on that dying platform.

The crucial take-away is that human-extinctionist ideologies are widespread within Silicon Valley. Most of the tech elite envision a future in which our species has no place — we have, instead, been replaced by posthuman AIs, by “intelligent” machines. Don’t be fooled by the rhetoric of Musk and Verdon: this is extinctionism no less than the claim of some radical environmentalists, i.e., that Homo sapiens should got the way of the dodo.

In my view, it is absolutely crucial for journalists, policymakers, academics, and the general public to understand this. Extinctionism is everywhere these days, even among some of the loudest voices shouting that we must avoid “human extinction” — the transhumanists and longtermists.

The real anti-extinctionists are those, like me, who believe that posthuman AIs shouldn’t take over the world. So, which side are you on: Team Human or Team Posthuamn?
